Dutch Bros, a rapidly growing U.S. coffee chain, is making a significant move in the beverage retail landscape by acquiring dozens of former Salad and Go restaurant locations across the Southwest. The deal, valued at approximately $105 million, marks another aggressive expansion play for the chain as it continues to increase its footprint across American markets.

What Happened: The Acquisition Details

In early August, Dutch Bros subsidiary Boersma Bros LLC entered into an asset purchase agreement to acquire leases and equipment from 51 closed Salad and Go locations in Arizona and Nevada. The agreement also includes 14 additional leases in Texas and Oklahoma for a minimal purchase price of $50. However, the transaction still requires approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas before it can officially close.

The purchase covers physical assets including furniture, fixtures, equipment, vehicles, computer systems, point-of-sale terminals, leasehold improvements, customer lists specific to each location, security deposits, and transferable utility contracts. Notably, the deal does not include the Salad and Go brand name or its associated intellectual property, meaning these spaces will be converted into Dutch Bros locations rather than maintaining the Salad and Go identity.

Why Salad and Go Closed

Salad and Go, which launched in Gilbert, Arizona, in 2013, had grown into a health-focused fast-casual alternative with 146 locations at its peak in 2022. The company had achieved a billion-dollar valuation and operated primarily as a small drive-through model supported by centralized food production facilities. However, the chain faced significant operational challenges, closing approximately 41 underperforming restaurants in September 2025, followed by all remaining Texas and Oklahoma locations in January. By August 2025, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and shut down its final 70 locations.

This acquisition signals continued growth for Dutch Bros, which operates more than 1,100 shops across 25 states. For consumers in Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma, the conversion of these 65 former Salad and Go locations to Dutch Bros outlets means expanded access to the chain’s coffee offerings. Those searching for quality beverages in areas where Salad and Go once operated will soon have Dutch Bros as an alternative.

The expansion also reflects broader trends in the coffee industry toward aggressive chain growth and consolidation. As specialty coffee chains compete for market share, acquiring existing locations and infrastructure allows them to scale faster than building new sites from scratch. This strategy reduces both development time and initial capital investment compared to traditional expansion methods.

For consumers who previously visited Salad and Go for health-conscious meal options, the transition represents a change in what’s available locally. While Dutch Bros is known for its specialty coffee and customizable beverage options, the chain does not offer the salad-focused menu that made Salad and Go distinct. This shift may influence dining choices for shoppers in affected regions who valued quick, healthy meal alternatives alongside beverages.

The Bigger Picture for Coffee Retail

Dutch Bros’ acquisition strategy demonstrates how larger chains are consolidating retail real estate in competitive markets. The company’s ability to absorb dozens of locations and their infrastructure at once allows it to maintain momentum during its growth phase. Many of these locations feature existing drive-through infrastructure, which aligns well with Dutch Bros’ primary operational model.

The coffee industry continues to evolve with more options for consumers seeking specialized beverages. Whether you prefer traditional brewing methods or modern customization, understanding how chains like Dutch Bros are expanding helps shoppers anticipate which locations and services will be available in their area. Consumers interested in expanding their coffee experience might explore quality creamers to enhance their daily brew or invest in better home brewing equipment like precision burr grinders to complement their specialty coffee purchases.

As Dutch Bros continues its expansion and the retail coffee landscape shifts, staying informed about these changes helps consumers navigate their options and find the coffee experiences that best suit their preferences and location.
