Detailed Review
Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer addresses one of the most persistent outdoor pest problems with a straightforward, no-fuss approach. The dry powder formulation eliminates the frustration of measuring and mixing liquid concentrates, making it accessible for casual homeowners and experienced gardeners alike. With acephate as the active ingredient, this product targets the queen and colony structure directly, destroying the mound from within rather than simply eliminating foraging ants on the surface.
Performance-wise, the 60-minute activation window is notably fast compared to many traditional fire ant treatments. Users can expect complete colony elimination within 3-7 days when applied correctly to active mounds. The two-pack format provides substantial coverage, with each 12 oz. bottle treating up to 162 mounds depending on size and application rate. The lack of watering requirement is particularly valuable for those in areas with water restrictions or during dry seasons when irrigation isn't practical.
For best results, apply this product when fire ants are actively foraging and avoid disturbing the mound afterward. While this treatment excels at eliminating existing colonies, the manufacturer recommends pairing it with Ortho Fire Ant Killer Broadcast Granules for comprehensive yard protection and prevention of new mound formation for up to 6 months. This two-step approach provides both immediate problem-solving and longer-term peace of mind.
