Framework, the customizable laptop maker known for letting buyers upgrade and modify their machines, has announced a significant change to some existing Laptop 13 Pro preorders. The company is scaling back memory configurations on certain orders due to a sharp spike in LPCAMM2 memory module costs, a move that affects how the company fulfills commitments to customers who placed orders months ago.
Why Memory Costs Have Surged
Framework reported that prices from its memory supplier have more than doubled compared to its previous inventory levels. This increase far exceeded the low-to-mid double-digit price rise the company had anticipated. While Framework maintains sufficient memory modules overall to fill existing preorders, the mix of available capacities does not align with what customers ordered. The company has adequate stock of 64GB modules for early batches but lacks the right balance of 32GB and 16GB options for later orders.
Which Orders Are Being Affected

Framework will convert some preorders to lower memory tiers while maintaining the original pricing customers agreed to. Orders configured with 64GB RAM beyond Batch 4 will be reduced to 32GB at the 32GB price. Similarly, 32GB configurations of the DIY Edition and Mainboard orders after specific batch cutoffs will drop to 16GB and be charged the 16GB rate instead. The company made an exception for Core X7 Ultra prebuilt systems with 32GB, since Framework does not currently offer those machines in a 16GB configuration.
These adjustments represent a customer-friendly approach to a difficult supply situation. Rather than canceling orders or charging customers the inflated current prices, Framework is absorbing the cost difference by honoring the original pricing agreements, even though the memory configurations have changed.
New Orders Will Cost More
Going forward, buyers placing new orders will face higher costs across multiple components. Framework has raised pricing on LPCAMM2 memory modules, and system and Mainboard prices are being adjusted to account for increases in processors, Windows licenses, memory, storage, and other silicon components. This represents the second wave of price increases in recent months for the Laptop 13 Pro line.
This Is Not the First Price Increase
Framework warned customers about rising costs back in May, when the company’s stockpile of affordable SSD inventory from 2025 was running low. As that cheaper stock sold through, newer and more expensive storage modules entered inventory, driving storage prices upward. At that time, DDR5 memory appeared more stable, though even then the 8GB modules saw price increases as Framework exhausted its lower-cost supply.
The pattern highlights the challenge that hardware makers face when component costs fluctuate. Windows laptops we recommend for work and gaming often experience similar supply and pricing pressures, though most manufacturers simply pass those costs directly to consumers rather than absorbing them on existing orders.
Some Components Are Getting Cheaper

Not all components are heading in the same direction. Framework has reduced prices on 48GB DDR5 modules, the SN850X 8TB SSD, and the SN7100 1TB drive. These reductions offset increases on 16GB DDR5, SN850X 1TB, and SN7100 4TB options. Importantly, existing preorders automatically receive any price reductions when component costs drop, ensuring customers benefit when market conditions improve.
What This Means for Laptop Shoppers
For anyone considering a customizable laptop for home use, Framework’s situation underscores both the benefits and risks of preordering. The company’s willingness to honor original pricing on downgrades demonstrates commitment to customer fairness, but the memory reduction still represents a meaningful compromise for those expecting 64GB or 32GB configurations.
The broader takeaway is that component supply and pricing remain volatile in the PC market. Those looking at Framework or similar machines should monitor pricing trends and be prepared for the possibility that configurations or pricing may shift between order placement and delivery. For buyers prioritizing maximum flexibility and customization, laptops designed for content creators offer modular approaches that help protect against some of these supply chain disruptions. Checking the latest pricing and reviewing any pending preorders directly with the manufacturer can help you understand exactly what you will receive and what you will pay.
