Detailed Review
ORIJEN Original stands out in the premium cat food market by prioritizing biological appropriateness. The formula contains 90% animal-based ingredients, with the first five components being fresh and raw free-run chicken, turkey, whole mackerel, turkey giblets, and flounder. This composition directly addresses what cats evolved to eat: high-protein, moisture-rich prey. The freeze-dried coating adds a layer of appeal, delivering the raw flavor cats instinctively recognize and desire, which can improve palatability for picky eaters.
The grain-free, potato-free formulation addresses a critical concern for many cat owners: digestive sensitivity and allergic reactions. By eliminating common fillers and including probiotics, this food supports healthy digestion and nutrient absorption. The inclusion of omega fatty acids, taurine, and essential vitamins and minerals promotes visible benefits including a shiny coat, healthy skin, and optimal heart function. The product is AAFCO certified for all life stages, meaning it meets rigorous nutritional standards whether you have a kitten or a senior cat.
While the price point is considerably higher than mainstream alternatives, the ingredient quality and nutritional density justify the investment for health-conscious pet owners. The 4 lb bag provides roughly one month of supply for a single adult cat, though multi-cat households may find replenishment frequency inconvenient. Cats transitioning from lower-quality foods may experience brief digestive adjustments, but this typically resolves within a week as their system adapts to the superior ingredient profile.
